For a motocross race you need your AMA membership and entry paperwork, the required gear (approved full-face helmet, goggles, boots, long sleeves and pants, chest and back protection), a prepared bike with legible numbers and a working transponder, and enough fuel, tools, spares, shade, water and food to get through a long day. Only about a dozen of those items are rules. The rest are what keep a small problem from ending your day.
Print the tables, pack the night before, and tick things off as they go in the truck. If this is your first race, read how to start racing dirt bikes first.
How do you read this checklist?
Each row has one of three labels:
- Required: a rule in the 2026 AMA Racing Rulebook or on a series or track page we link. No item, no race.
- Bring: no rule says so, but you will not get through the day without it.
- Nice: makes the day easier.
Rules change by track and series, so read the event flyer and supplemental rules as well. These are as of 2026.
What paperwork and money do you need?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| AMA membership card or number | Required | The rulebook requires every rider to be an AMA member or hold an AMA one-event pass. Washougal lists a day pass at $30 |
| Registration confirmation | Bring | At Washougal, riders who register online still check in at the tower before they practice |
| AMA annual minor release, parent or guardian | Required under 18 | Minors need a parent or legal guardian present. Another adult needs a notarized authorization. The Cal Classic wants the release card shown at registration |
| District or series license | If racing for points | Local series score points against their own membership |
| Cash and a card | Bring | Gate fee per person, entry per class, transponder rental and deposit. District 37 sign-up is cash or cheque only |
| Pen and paper | Nice | The AMA’s own list includes them, for writing down the practice and race order |
The AMA asks for the minor release at least three weeks before the first race. What the fees add up to is in what it costs to race motocross.
What riding gear is required?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full-face helmet | Required | Must carry a label for Snell M2020 or M2025, DOT FMVSS 218, ECE 22.05 or 22.06, JIS T 8133:2015 or FIM. No cameras or accessories attached |
| Goggles | Required | The rulebook says shatterproof goggles or a face shield. Bring spare lenses or a second pair |
| Boots | Required | At least 8 inches high |
| Long-sleeve jersey and durable pants | Required | In all competition |
| Chest and back protection | Required in motocross | Mandatory for every motocross rider. Off-road it is required for youth and “highly recommended” for everyone else |
| Gloves | Bring | Recommended by the AMA, required by WORCS |
| Knee braces or pads, neck brace | Nice | On the AMA’s recommended list |
| Second jersey, gloves and socks | Nice | Dry kit for the second moto |
Pack the gear bag from a list, not from memory. A forgotten boot is a wasted drive.
What does the bike need to pass tech?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Three number plates, 5-inch numbers | Required in motocross | Numbers must be plain block figures, not shaded or outlined. Recommended colors: C is black with white numbers, B yellow with black, A white with black |
| Exhaust inside the sound limit | Required | Pre-race limit is 96 dB/A for two-strokes and 94 dB/A for four-strokes, or the state limit if lower |
| Transponder, mounted and working | Required where used | Under AMA timed-practice rules it is the rider’s job to have staging check it. A dead one costs you gate pick |
| No glass lights, mirrors or license plate | Required in motocross | The rulebook bans them as a hazard |
| Bike prepped the day before | Bring | Air filter, oil, chain, brakes, spokes, bolts. See our maintenance schedule |
Transponder rentals at the tracks we checked run $10 a day with a $100 deposit at Washougal, $20 at the Cal Classic and $20 to $25 at High Point, where the rental “must be returned at the event.”
Which spares and tools should you pack?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clutch and brake levers | Bring | The first thing to break in a tip-over. On the AMA’s list |
| Spare tube, or a spare wheel | Bring | A flat in practice should not send you home |
| Spark plug | Bring | Cheap, and on the AMA’s list |
| Clean, oiled air filter | Bring | Swap between motos when it is dusty |
| Chain master link, spare bolts, zip ties, tape, safety wire | Bring | Fixes most things for one more moto |
| Bike stand | Bring | You cannot work on a bike lying on its side |
| T-handles, sockets, wrenches, spoke wrench, axle wrench | Bring | Everything needed to pull both wheels |
| Tire irons, pump and low-pressure gauge | Bring | Set pressure at the track. See dirt bike tire pressure |
| Spare grips, cables, brake pads, sprocket | Nice | Worth carrying once you race often |
What fluids and fuel do you need?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full gas can | Bring | On the AMA’s list. Premix for a two-stroke, mixed at home |
| Funnel or spout, rags, paper towels | Bring | Spilled fuel in the pits is a hazard |
| Engine oil, chain lube, filter oil | Bring | Top up and re-lube between motos |
| Coolant, brake fluid, contact cleaner | Nice | For the day something leaks |
| Fire extinguisher, 2 lb minimum, BC-rated | Strongly advised | The rulebook says every rider “should have” a working one in the pit |
| Spill mat | Required for some pits | District 37 requires an extinguisher and a spill mat if you pit yourself |
In motocross you cannot refuel during a moto outside a designated mechanic’s area, so start each moto full.
What goes in the pit, and what do you eat and drink?
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Canopy and chairs | Bring | You are at the track all day for a few minutes of racing |
| Ramp and tie-downs | Bring | Easy to leave in the garage |
| Mat or tarp under the bike | Nice | Keeps bolts out of the dirt |
| Water and sports drinks in a cooler | Bring | See the hydration note below |
| Real food and snacks | Bring | Do not count on a snack bar being open |
| Sunscreen, hat, rain jacket | Bring | The weather will change |
| Wash bucket, brush, bin bags | Nice | Pack out what you bring in |
| First aid kit | Bring | GNCC puts one on its recommended list |
| Change of clothes and a towel | Nice | For the drive home |
On drinking, the only figure we will give is a general one. For moderate activity in the heat lasting under two hours, CDC’s NIOSH says to drink 1 cup (8 oz) of water every 15 to 20 minutes, to use sports drinks with balanced electrolytes if sweating goes on for several hours, and that intake should not generally exceed 6 cups an hour. That guidance is written for people working in heat, not for racers, and it is not medical advice. If a rider stops sweating, is confused or feels faint, go to the track medics.
What changes for off-road, grand prix and desert races?
One long race means you carry more on you and on the bike.
| Item | Need | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hydration pack | Bring | No break between motos to drink. GNCC lists a CamelBak as recommended |
| Spark arrestor and registration | Required in some series | District 37 requires a USFS-approved spark arrestor, a green or red sticker or plate, and 96 dB. WORCS says its tracks need neither a spark arrestor nor a sound test |
| Series transponder | Required | NGPC sells a $10 one that sticks under your helmet visor. WORCS mounts on the left front of the bike |
| Correct number backgrounds | Required | WORCS can penalise or disqualify for the wrong colors |
| Tools and spares on the bike | Bring | Nobody can hand you a wrench mid-loop |
| Pit fuel, extinguisher, spill mat | Required if self-pitting | AMA off-road rules allow fuel only in the designated pit. WORCS bans carrying gasoline outside the tank |
| Lights | Required at some events | AMA reliability enduros require a working headlight, taillight and stoplight. Check the rules for any race that runs near dark |
Two more differences: NGPC uses a dead-engine start for most races, and under AMA rules you cannot pre-ride an enduro or hare and hound course.
What is the timeline for race morning?
Times are from real 2026 schedules: Washougal’s Classic 7 series and the AMA Cal Classic at Fox Raceway. Yours will differ, so read the flyer.
| Step | Example time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive and park | Gates open 6:00am at Washougal | Pay the gate, unload, set up shade |
| Sign-up | Tower opens 6:00am at Washougal, 6:30am at Fox | AMA card, minor paperwork, entry fee, collect the transponder |
| Tech and transponder | Before practice | Mount the transponder, check numbers. GNCC wants bike and helmet at tech |
| Riders meeting | Listen for the PA | Race order, flags, start procedure |
| Practice | 7:30am at Washougal, 8:00am at Fox | Ride with your assigned group only |
| Staging | Racing from about 10:00am at Washougal | Write the race order down. Be geared up two races ahead |
| After the last moto | Before you leave | Return the rental transponder, check results |
Off-road runs on a different clock. GNCC says to arrive at least two hours before your race, opens the start line 30 minutes before the start, and holds the riders meeting over the PA about 15 minutes out.
What should you do the night before?
- Load the bike, stand, ramp, gas can and gear bag, and tick them off the printed list.
- Charge the transponder if it is a rechargeable one, and your phone.
- Put the AMA card, minor release and cash in one envelope in the truck.
- Fill the cooler and freeze a few water bottles.
- Check the event page once more for schedule changes.
The night before is for loading the truck. The bike should already be done.
Common questions
- What do I need to bring to a motocross race?
- Your AMA card and entry money, the required gear (approved full-face helmet, goggles, boots, long sleeves and pants, chest and back protection), a prepared bike with legible numbers and a transponder, fuel, a stand, basic tools and spares, shade, water and food.
- What paperwork do I need for a dirt bike race?
- An AMA membership or one-event pass, your registration confirmation, and for riders under 18 the AMA annual minor release with a parent or legal guardian present. An adult who is not the parent needs a notarized authorization.
- Do I need a transponder to race motocross?
- At most organized races, yes, and it is usually a rental. The tracks we checked for 2026 rent them for $10 to $25 a day with a deposit, and the rental has to go back before you leave.
- How loud can my dirt bike be at a race?
- The 2026 AMA rulebook's pre-race limit is 96 dB/A for two-strokes and 94 dB/A for four-strokes, or the state limit if that is lower. AMA District 37 lists 96 dB for its desert races.
- How early should I get to the track on race day?
- Early enough to park, sign up, pass tech and gear up before practice. GNCC tells riders to arrive at least two hours before their race, and the motocross tracks we checked open sign-up about 90 minutes before practice.
