Racing a season of local amateur motocross costs about $1,500 on a tight budget, about $4,000 for a typical 12-race season, and about $11,800 if you race 20 weekends and camp. That is the cost of racing itself in 2026: entries, gate fees, membership, transponder, tires, oil, fuel and the drive. The bike and gear come on top, so a first year with a used 250F and entry-level gear lands near $9,100.
Most pages that answer this question give one round number with nothing behind it. Every figure here is a line item with a source, so you can swap in your own track, your own mileage and your own race count and redo the maths.
What does a motocross season cost in total?
Three budgets, all for one rider on a 250 four-stroke. The assumptions are mine and they are stated under the table. The prices are not: each one links to its source further down.

How each column is built:
- Low: 8 one-day races, one class at $50, gate for the rider only at $20, a rented transponder at $10 a day, one set of tires, a 60-mile round trip.
- Typical: 12 one-day races, two classes at $50 each, gate for two people at $20, your own transponder, two sets of tires, a 150-mile round trip.
- High: 20 two-day weekends, two classes at $60 each, weekend gate for two people at $40, your own transponder, four sets of tires, a 300-mile round trip and $75 of camping each weekend.
What is not in any column: top-end rebuilds, crash damage, chains, sprockets, brake pads, practice days, suspension service, food, and the truck or trailer you haul with. Those are real, and I cover the engine below.

How much does a motocross bike cost?
New, as of 2026, from the manufacturers’ own sites:
| Bike | MSRP | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Yamaha YZ65 (youth) | $4,499 | Yamaha |
| 2026 Yamaha YZ85 (youth) | $5,199 | Yamaha |
| 2026 Yamaha YZ125 | $7,199 | Yamaha |
| 2026 Yamaha YZ250F | $8,899 | Yamaha |
| 2027 KTM 250 SX-F | $10,699 | KTM |
MSRP is not what you pay. Yamaha adds a $675 destination charge to both the YZ125 and the YZ250F, which puts the 250F at $9,574 before tax and dealer fees. That is the number in the high column.
Used is where most amateurs start. Kelley Blue Book shows a typical listing price of $4,390 for a 2021 Yamaha YZ250F in good condition, less than half the price of a new one. That is the figure in the low and typical columns. A used race bike can also be one overdue engine rebuild away from costing you the difference, so ask for hours and service records.
How much does motocross gear cost?
List prices on the makers’ own sites, as of October 2026:
| Item | Entry level | Top of the range |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet | $179.95 (Bell MX-9 Mips) | $999.95 (Bell Moto-10 Spherical) |
| Boots | $269.95 (Alpinestars Tech 3) | $699.95 (Alpinestars Tech 10) |
| Jersey | $49.95 (Fox 180) | same |
| Pants | $154.95 (Fox 180) | same |
| Gloves | $34.95 (Fox 180) | same |
| Total | $689.75 | $1,939.75 |
Goggles, a chest protector, knee guards and a neck brace are extra, and I have left them out rather than guess. Kids’ kit is cheaper: Fox lists the youth 180 jersey at $39.95 and the youth pants at $84.95. Both the MX-9 Mips and some Moto-10 colors were on sale when I checked, so shop around, but do not buy a used helmet.
How much are motocross entry fees and gate fees?
This is the number that varies most, so here are four real 2026 fee pages rather than an average.
| Event | Entry per class | Gate per person | Transponder rental |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota Motocross Association | $20 | $7 a day | Issued to members |
| Classic 7 series, Washougal MX Park | $50 | $40 weekend, $20 Sunday only | $10 a day |
| High Point Raceway | $55 pre-entry, $60 at the event | $20 to $30 depending on the day | $20 to $25 |
| AMA Cal Classic, Fox Raceway | $85 | $10 to $30 depending on the day | $20 |

Three things catch new racers out:
- Fees are per class. Most riders enter two classes to get more gate drops, which doubles the entry line.
- Everyone pays the gate. Gate admission is per person, so a family of four at $20 each pays more at the gate than the rider pays to race.
- The extras add up. Fox Raceway lists practice at $40 per rider and camping at $20 a night. Washougal lists weekend camping at $75.
What if you chase Loretta Lynn’s?
The AMA Amateur National qualifying path adds fees on top of the track’s own. MX Sports charges $25 per class at an Area Qualifier, separate from gate admission and the track’s race entry. For the 2026 Regional Championships the online processing fee was $70 per class, again before the track’s entry and gate fees. Regionals are usually far from home, so the real cost is the travel.
How much is an AMA membership, and do you need a transponder?
The AMA lists a one-year membership at $49, a youth membership for riders aged 11 or younger at $35, and a family membership at $119 a year for up to five family members. You need one for any AMA-sanctioned race. Washougal sells a $30 day pass, which stops making sense after your second race. Not every series is AMA: the North Dakota Motocross Association requires its own membership and does not take day riders.
Most tracks score with transponders. You can rent one each race day ($10 at Washougal, $20 to $25 at High Point) or buy your own. A MyLaps TR2 rechargeable motocross transponder with a one-year subscription was $125.95 at Live Time Scoring when I checked, against a $134.50 list price. At $10 a day, buying pays for itself in the first season if you race 13 times or more. At $20 a day it pays for itself after seven. The subscription needs renewing after the first year.
What does it cost to keep a motocross bike running?
Tires
A new YZ250F runs an 80/100-21 front and a 110/90-19 rear, according to Yamaha’s spec sheet. In those sizes the Dunlop Geomax MX34 was $125.99 for the front and $150.99 for the rear at MotoSport, so $276.98 a set before tubes or mounting. Rears wear faster than fronts, and hard-pack tracks wear both faster than loam.
Oil and filters
Both manuals I checked agree on this one. Honda’s CRF250R maintenance schedule replaces the engine oil and oil filter every six races or about 15 hours, and counts one race as about 2.5 hours on the bike. KTM’s 2025 250 SX-F manual changes the oil and filter every 15 operating hours and gives the oil fill as 1.0 litre.
A quart of Yamalube 10W-40 is $10.99 and an OEM Yamaha oil filter is $14.95, so call it $25.94 a change. At 2.5 hours per race day, an 8-race season is 20 hours, 12 races is 30 hours and 20 races is 50 hours. That is two, two and four changes if you follow the book. Plenty of racers change oil more often than the manual asks, and at $11 a quart it is cheap insurance. Honda also has you clean the air filter after every race.
Top-end rebuilds
This is the cost the round-number articles skip, and the manufacturers do not agree on it. Honda’s schedule replaces the piston and rings every six races or about 15 hours. KTM’s schedule changes the piston as part of a minor engine service every 45 operating hours, with a major service at 90. Both manuals say hard use shortens the interval.
By Honda’s book, the low, typical and high seasons above mean one, two and three pistons a year. By KTM’s book they mean none, none and one. Practice days add hours on top of both.
I have left the rebuild out of the totals because I could not find a current parts price for a 250F piston kit that I could verify, and labour varies by shop. Treat it as the biggest missing line in the table.
Fuel
A YZ250F tank holds 1.6 gallons, per Yamaha. I have budgeted two tanks per race day, which is an assumption, not a measurement. The EIA’s weekly survey put US premium at $5.46 a gallon for the week of September 21, 2026, so 3.2 gallons is $17.47 a race day. Race fuel costs several times that and a stock bike does not need it.
How much does travel add?
More than the entry fees, in a typical season. The simplest honest way to price the drive is the IRS standard mileage rate, which is 76 cents a mile for the second half of 2026 (it was 72.5 cents for January through June). That rate covers fuel, tires, maintenance, insurance and depreciation on the tow vehicle, so it is higher than what you pay at the pump on the day.
- 60 miles round trip: $45.60 a race, $365 over 8 races.
- 150 miles round trip: $114 a race, $1,368 over 12 races.
- 300 miles round trip: $228 a race, $4,560 over 20 races.
If you only want to count fuel, divide your round-trip miles by your truck’s miles per gallon and multiply by the pump price. Either way, the cheapest change you can make to a motocross budget is racing closer to home.
How does this compare with a pro desert program?
It is a different scale. The typical season above is 12 race days for $4,039, or about $337 per race day. Our own 2027 desert budget is $85,144 for six races with three riders, which is about $14,191 per race. The full breakdown is in what it costs to run a desert motorcycle race team.
The shape is the same, though. In both budgets the bike is the biggest single cost and it is paid before the first gate drops, and in both the cost of getting to the race is larger than the cost of entering it.
How do you keep the cost down?
- Buy the bike used and put the difference into fresh tires and a serviced engine.
- Race one series at one or two nearby tracks instead of chasing events.
- Buy the annual AMA membership, not day passes, if you will race more than once.
- Rent a transponder for your first few races, then buy one if you stick with it.
- Do your own oil, filter and tire changes. The parts are cheap and the labour is not.
Common questions
- How much does it cost to race motocross for a season?
- Using 2026 prices, a local amateur season costs about $1,500 at the low end, about $4,000 for a typical 12-race season in two classes, and about $11,800 for 20 weekends with camping. Those figures cover entries, gate fees, membership, transponder, tires, oil, fuel and travel, but not the bike, gear, engine rebuilds or crash damage.
- How much is a motocross race entry fee?
- The 2026 fees we found range from $20 per class at North Dakota Motocross Association races to $85 per class at the AMA Cal Classic at Fox Raceway. Washougal's Classic 7 series charges $50 per class and High Point Raceway charges $55 to $60. Gate admission is charged on top, per person.
- Do you need an AMA membership to race motocross?
- Only at AMA-sanctioned events. A one-year AMA membership is $49, youth membership for riders 11 or younger is $35 and a family membership is $119. Some tracks sell a one-day pass, and some series, such as the North Dakota Motocross Association, require their own membership instead.
- How much does a motocross bike cost?
- As of 2026 a new Yamaha YZ250F starts at $8,899 plus a $675 destination charge, a YZ125 two-stroke starts at $7,199 and a YZ65 youth bike at $4,499. Kelley Blue Book lists a typical listing price of $4,390 for a used 2021 YZ250F in good condition.
- Is motocross cheaper than desert racing?
- Yes, by a long way. A typical local motocross season in this budget works out to about $337 per race day. Our own 2027 desert budget is $85,144 for six races with three riders, which is about $14,191 per race.
